ALMA OBSERVATIONS OF Lyα BLOB 1: HALO SUBSTRUCTURE ILLUMINATED FROM WITHIN
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present new Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) 850 μm continuum observations of the original Lyα Blob (LAB) in the SSA22 field at z=3.1 (SSA22-LAB01). The ALMA map resolves the previously identified submillimeter source into three components with a total flux density ofS850=1.68±0.06 mJy, corresponding to a star-formation rate of ∼150Me yr. The submillimeter sources are associated with several faint (m≈ 27 mag) rest-frame ultraviolet sources identified in Hubble Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) clear filter imaging (λ≈ 5850 Å). One of these companions is spectroscopically confirmed with the Keck Multi-Object Spectrometer For Infra-Red Exploration to lie within 20 projected kpc and 250 km s of one of the ALMA components. We postulate that some of these STIS sources represent a population of lowmass star-forming satellites surrounding the central submillimeter sources, potentially contributing to their growth and activity through accretion. Using a high-resolution cosmological zoom simulation of a 10Me halo at z=3, including stellar, dust, and Lyα radiative transfer, we can model the ALMA+STIS observations and demonstrate that Lyα photons escaping from the central submillimeter sources are expected to resonantly scatter in neutral hydrogen, the majority of which is predicted to be associated with halo substructure. We show how this process gives rise to extended Lyα emission with similar surface brightness and morphology to observed giant LABs.

Alma Observations of Lyman-α Blob 1: Halo Sub-structure Illuminated from Within
We present new Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) 850μm continuum observations of the original Lymanα Blob (LAB) in the SSA22 field at z = 3.1 (SSA22-LAB01). The ALMA map resolves the previously identified submillimeter source into three components with total flux density S850 = 1.68± 0.06 mJy, corresponding to a star formation rate of ∼150 M yr−1. The submillimeter sources are...
متن کاملA Lyman - α blob in the GOODS South field : evidence for cold accretion onto a dark matter halo ⋆
We report on the discovery of a z = 3.16 Lyman-α emitting blob in the GOODS South field. The blob has a total Lyα luminosity of ∼ 10 43 erg s −1 and a diameter larger than 60 kpc. The available multi-wavelength data in the GOODS field consists of 13 bands from X-rays (Chandra) to infrared (Spitzer). Unlike other discovered Lyα blobs, this blob shows no obvious continuum counterpart in any of th...
متن کاملA Submillimeter Galaxy Illuminating Its Circumgalactic Medium: Lyα Scattering in a Cold, Clumpy Outflow
We report the detection at 850μm of the central source in SSA22-LAB1, the archetypal ‘Lyman-α Blob’ (LAB), a 100 kpc-scale radio-quiet emission-line nebula at z = 3.1. The flux density of the source, S850 = 4.6± 1.1 mJy implies the presence of a galaxy, or group of galaxies, with a total luminosity of LIR ≈ 1012 L⊙. The position of an active source at the center of a ∼50 kpc-radius ring of line...
متن کاملOBSERVATIONS OF RADIO GALAXY MRC 1138-262: MERGING GALAXIES EMBEDDED IN A GIANT Lyα HALO
The radio galaxy MRC 1138-262 at z = 2.16 is most likely a brightest cluster galaxy in an early stage of evolution. Here we present observations of the luminous emission line halo and the stellar components of this radio galaxy. Optical narrow band imaging shows a very extended (∼ 160 kpc) and luminous Lyα halo. Infrared narrow band imaging reveals a much smaller Hα halo with a morphology very ...
متن کاملThe extended Lyman - α emission surrounding the z = 3 . 04 radio - quiet QSO 1205 - 30 : Primordial infalling gas illuminated by the quasar ? ⋆
We present spectroscopic observations obtained with the FORS1 instrument on the ESO VLT under good seeing conditions of the radio-quiet zem = 3.04 quasar Q1205-30 and its associated extended Lyα emission. The extended Lyα emission was originally found in a deep narrow band image targeting a z abs ≈ zem Lyman-limit system in the spectrum of the QSO. Using spectral point-spread function fitting t...
